#1 Jojo Junior says his father, Jojo Senior, was the monkey in Monkey Island 1 who helps Guybrush by hanging on a totem pole and keeping a gate open. He also says that he had not learned to let go and therefore he died.
However, Jojo was actually the monkey in Monkey Island 2 who played the piano.
There is the possibility that both monkeys were named Jojo, but isn't that very unoriginal?

#2 Governor Elaine Marley-Threepwood says that the position of governor is a lifetime term. However, there is a poster in Monkey Island 1 in the village on Melee Island. The poster says to re-elect Governor Marley. How
can you re-elect someone for a lifetime term?

#3 To prove to the waitress in Planet Threepwood that you are Guybrush Threepwood you tell her to ask you something only Guybrush could know the answer to. When you answer incorrectly she says that everyone
knows the real answer. If everyone knows the answer then why did she ask that? She was supposed to ask something only Guybrush could know.

#4 When Guybrush asks the truth-telling parrot what the capital of North Dakota is, it will answer "Fargo". The capital of North Dakota is Bismark.

This might be a reference to the movie Fargo which is set in North Dakota.

#5 In the Bait Shop on Lucre Island there is a bell over the door. However, since the bell is on the inside and the door swings outward, it is completely useless.

#6 After you hit Herman Toothrot with the milk bottle (Or any other object after the coconut) and then examine him, Guybrush will say "Who would've known Herman Toothrot is really old Grandpa Marley?". However, Guybrush has not yet learned Herman's secret.

#7 Elaine is campaigning by going around and knocking on doors. However, sometimes you can see her talking through the open door to the Voodoo Lady's house, but as you know the Voodoo Lady does not come to the door. You have to pull a finger on her table to make her appear.
If you run inside the house while Elaine is talking you can also see that the Voodoo Lady is not there.

#8 Several times we see a map of the Tri-Island Area and it is vastly different from the one we saw at the beginning of "Curse of Monkey Island". Many islands have moved, a few have disappeared, and four new ones are there.

#9 You can complete the part of the game on Jambalaya island without going into the Microgroggery (by getting the Monkey Meal ticket from Stan and by giving one of the parrots some coffee rather than grog) and so without even seeing the manatee. At the very end of the game, one of the lines Guybrush can say is something like, "I want another shot at taming the manatee"

#10 In the Mysts o' Tyme Swamp, when Guybrush is handed a pistol by the future Guybrush, he says that he never had a gun in any previous adventure. And yet, in Monkey Island 3, Guybrush does get his hands on a gun. He uses it to shoot van Helgen's banjo.

#11 At the monkey head the Q-tip is put in the left ear and it's still there. This isn't right since Guybrush used the Q-tip in the RIGHT ear to open the head. Also Guybrush didn't leave the Q-tip in the ear either.

#13 You can talk to the Voodoo-lady about that she relocated at the Island of Puerto Pollo. It's not the island that was named Puerto Pollo but the city and she relocated in the swamp not in the town. The island was named Plunder Island.

#14 Elaine is still the governor of Mêlée Island when she and Guybrush comes back from their honeymoon and finds out that she is declared dead. The problem is that she can't still be the governor because in MI2 when you meet Elaine when trying to steal her map she claims that she quit her job on Mêlée before moving to Booty.

#16 Guybrush wants to buy a necklace to make him invincible from the Voodoo Lady because he wants to go into the women's room but the necklaces made of eyeballs only makes people invincible to ghosts.

#17 You can ask Inspector Canard about where to find Pegnose, he answers this "If I knew that he'd be locked up right now". However, you can ask that same thing AFTER Pegnose is caught and Canard answers the same thing, which doesn't make any sense since Pegnose has already been caught.

#18 When you're in Planet Threepwood and the waitress gives you the monkey mug with your chosen beverage in it, you can make Guybrush pick it up and try to put it in his
pocket. But if the mug had drink in it, it would spill.

The purpose of their journey to Monkey Island was the rescue of Elaine.

#21 On Knuttin Atoll, when you haven't been inside the pirate school yet, you can examine it and Guybrush will say: "I wonder what that is", referring to the school.
Then when you have been inside it, and you examine it, Guybrush still says: "I wonder what that is". This makes no sense since he has been inside it and knows what it is now.

#22 When Guybrush goes to Meathook's house, before he went to Lucre Island, if you introduce yourself as Guybrush Threepwood, Meathook will say: "Come back when you've finished your wife's errands".

#23 When LeChuck and Ozzie are in the mansion, you see the prosthetic butt falling out of Guybrush's pants, nothing weird about that, but when you're on MI you see it in his

#26 There's an error in the Portuguese version of MI4, half of the islands have the name translation that should be the the same as in MI3, but they are completly wrong. For example, Booty Island was translated as ''Ilha do Saque'', but it's the Portuguese version for Plunder Island in MI3.

Programming errors


#1 In the Lua Bar, after you have jammed the brush in the contraption, wait for the chef to try and fix it. Then, while he is standing there, go around him and stand to his left, then, try to pick up the brush. Since the Chef is in the way, Guybrush will just keep on walking, and the chef will stand there forever.

#2 If you press F1 and select "New Game" when Guybrush is tied to the mast in the small puzzle in the middle of the intro, you will see a short glimpse of the game screen before the new game begins. In this short glimpse you can see Guybrush standing freely on the deck and is not tied up.

#3 Another error, similar to Programming error #1, can also occur in the Lua Bar.
Try waiting at the foot of the bridge, aiming yourself at a spot mid-bridge and far to the right, with your finger on 'Shift'. Then, as the waitress begins to cross run over to that spot. If you've done it right, you and the waitress will be trapped in an infinite treadmill-like state.

#4 When you are in front of Admiral Casaba you have 5 options and one them is "Get Out of Here". Sounds nice but when you look in the inventory and pull out any object you can combine them with "Get out of here" option. I.e. if you take out the jar of glue you can select "Use jar of glue with here". Doesn't make much sense.

#5 When you put your Misc. Video Effects on minimum, the Norse ship at the harbor on Lucre Island disappears, but you can still examine it even though it isn't there.

#6 When the chess players are insulting each other, the skinny one may call the fat one a 'Gainesian pig.' But what does that mean?
It may be that Gainesian is a misspelling/mispronunciation of Keynesian, which describes the theories of economist John Maynard Keynes (1883-1946). Since the skinny chess player also uses the names of Soviet and Russian leaders to describe chess moves, it makes sense that he could make other economic
allusions.

#7 In the LUA BAR, after you get the painting, you can stick the paintbrush in the mechanism again, and pour the grog into the generator, there will be the same cutscene where the flaming ship melts the painting, but there is no flaming ship, and the painting had already been melted. I tried it once, and it had the scene in front of the kitchen, and Guybrush could not be seen.

#8 On Jambalaya Island, right after you step off the ship, before you check out town, you can talk to Otis and say, "Carla's drunk!" However, he has not been to town, and has not found out that she is drunk.

#12 When you're at Pegnose Pete's house and your listening to Ozzie Mandrill's and Pegnose Pete's conversation you can press the escape button or delete button and Ozzie Mandrill will leave and the door will stay open and not shut. You can see Pegnose Pete in the hut just standing there doing nothing.

#13 On Monkey Island itself, when you have Timmy the monkey following you and go into the Church of L Chuck it is impossible to ride the log flume with Timmy as it crashes the game as soon as you try to cross the mini bridge.

#14 When you go to sit on the bench on Lucre island while a tourist comes from the right side of the screen, you get trapped in a treadmill state similar to programming error #1 and #3.

#15 In the swamp you meet your future self by the gate and are given some things. If you get the gun as the third thing then shoot the future Guybrush. Eventually you will become the future Guybrush and get shot and you will end up on shore. Second time do it right and the game will for some reason skip one of the things (which one is random in my experience). Just give the things back in the right order and with one of the things (even though you're doing it right) he will say "are you sure you want to give me that right now", just move on to the next item. See a screenshot here, where Guybrush still has the gun.

#19 There are three ways of getting the wooden hand from the palace of prostheses.

1) The normal way: You take your music box and press 'play music box for dave'. guybrush puts the music box next to dave and the music starts playing, you will have to take the wooden hand before the music stops playing. when you take the wooden hand (when the music is still playing), dave thinks he heard you taking a hand, but Guybrush says it was the sound of the music box.

2) Second way: You take your music box and press 'use music box' in the house of prostheses and you let it play for a while, you can take the wooden hand without the music playing. dave thinks he heard you taking a hand, but Guybrush will say that it was the sound of the music box, however, the music box isn't playing.

3) When entering the Palace you shall go right up to the first basket of prostheses. Do it before talking to Deadeye Dave or something else, and you can just pick the hand up. Dave will say: "Did I hear something?" and Guybrush will answer that it was just the musicbox. This however makes no sense since you didn't use the musicbox. Then when you are holding the hand, it is an option to "use the wooden hand with basket of prostheses". If you try to do this Guybrush will say: "No thanks. I went through too much trouble to get it". This also makes absolutely no sense, since he just picked it up without problems.

#20 If you use the abobination of nature in the mists
of time while you are on the raft by the gate, he will float away out of the sceen and guybrush won't move...You have to load a saved game.

#21 When you jam the brush into the sushi boat works at the LUA bar a second time (and subsequent times) the cook will say, "What are these BRUSHES doing here?!" but the subtitle says "ees" instead of "are."

#22 Get Timmy to follow you into the mine shaft. Then, put a banana through the vent. Timmy will jump through to get it. Don't close the vent, just hold a banana up to the portal. Timmy will jump out and try to get the banana, but if you're standing in his way he can't jump to get it. He will keep walking forward without getting anywhere. Guybrush can't move because the game's not programmed to let you move him till Timmy gets the banana, and Timmy can't get it because you're in the way.

#23 When you have patched the game it seems as if Timmy blocks your approach to the cathedral, you have to dump him somewhere to approach - probably to avoid the bug where Timmy in the Cathedral crashes the game.

#24 You can tell the parrots apart without getting one of them drunk. The two non-questions directed at the lying parrot does not cause them to fly, and after this you just ask the other parrot. It wont help getting the treasure - just because you figure this out Guybrush doesn't.

#26 At the Lua Bar, follow the chef back to the kitchen and stand in between the door and the chef. Guybrush will walk through the door like magic. When he's in it, the door will be closed and he can't move. When he tries to enter the door the cook will kick him out and tell him to close the door behind, but guybrush will open the door and you'll have to load a saved game to continue.

Graphical errors


#1 When the camera is "behind the counter" in the Palace of Prostheses looking out over the shop, there is a prosthetic hand with a price tag hanging off it in the upper left corner. Guybrush walks "behind" the
hand (correct) but "in front of" the price tag (incorrect), resulting in one of those odd graphics effects.

#2 After completing the home made perfume, go to the Palace of Prostheses and get a side view of Deadeye Dave and Guybrush. Then, spray the perfume on him. The cloud of perfume however will appear in a little "box", which covers everything behind it.

#4 In the cutscene where Elaine is carrying luggage up from the ship hold and Guybrush is telling the story of how he defeated the pirates, you can see the box which Elaine wants to "stay on top" behind Guybrush BEFORE Elaine hands it to him.

#5 If you run to the far side of the canyon after you have placed the banana picker on the Giant Monkey Head, you can see the banana picker between the trees. You can't pick it up, but the game crashes on some computers if you try.

If you try to pick it up while in the lower part of the canyon, Guybrush will walk over to the cactus and suddenly he has another banana picker in his hand. However, he is now frozen and you have to load a game to continue.

#6 If you go up to the Vista Point on Monkey Island and fire a rock to the lava field, you can see the milk bottle on the island even if you haven't been near the lava field. When you do go near the lava field, a monkey throws the milk bottle from the side onto the island.

#7 No matter where the truth-telling parrot tells you the bronze hat is, Guybrush is always at the same stone in the cutscene that follows when you have located the hat.

#9 It happens in front of Planet Threepwood with our old friend Murray, the demonic skull. At this point you had to be very curious about the wax painting already. However if you had never taken a look at it, the following thing happen. If you ask Murray about the Ultimate Insult, Guybrush will show the backside of the painting. When Guybrush takes the painting out of his incredible large pants, the front side of the painting is still showing the wax painting of Meathook instead of the painting of the Tri Island Area.

#10 If you look carefully in the scenes "Hide and go stink" and "The Ultimate Insult" you can see the Scumm bar in Mêlée town but the it's have been replaced by the Lua bar so how come it's there again without any telling of rebuilt into Scumm bar.

#11 In the cutscene "The Shocking Truth About Charles," when Elaine is saying "Well, seems like the sensible..." she is animated entirely in front of the sofa she is sitting on. Most likely, this is because the characters and backgrounds were animated seperatley, and objects in front of a character would be re-added later. This one must have slipped through.

#12 Also, in the cutscene "The Shocking Truth About Charles," the character's positions, expecially Guybrush's, change around a lot. This is most noticable with the scene "Get out of my house..." with Elaine and Charles and the Marley Family Crest in the background. The brief scene with Guybrush burning himself is also in front of the Marley Family Crest, but closer. That would have obviously been impossible.

#15 In the opening sequence, when Guybrush is interrupted
during his flashback memories, he has that log book of his on his knees. As he gets up, the book falls on the deck in front of him. In the overhead view, however, the book is gone, and neither is it seen when you finally get to

#16 Guybrush enters the bank through an open window. Later, when Inspector Canard joins the scene, the window closes itself and the room's a bit darkened. But in the side view, where Guybrush walks along the wall with the lamps, the window's still open.

Incorrectly regarded as errors


Herman's story


Herman's story about him being Grandpa Marley is really complicated and so is the explanation as to why it may or may not be an error. Here follows first a thorough explanation as to why Herman's story is considered an error by many people and then follows a thorough explanation as to why it probably isn't an error and finally is a comment that points out why it is an error.

When Herman Toothrot tells the story of his past, he says that during a boat race, Ozzie Mandrill pushes him into a whirlpool. However, in The Curse of Monkey Island LeChuck says HE pushed him into the whirlpool and LeChuck couldn't have been working for Ozzie Mandrill at that time, since he said he met him after he dragged him out from under from the mountain of ice.

Herman says he washed up alone on the shores of Monkey Island and took the name Herman Toothrot, but if you read the Captain's log in The Secret of Monkey Island you learn that he traveled to Monkey Island on the ship "The Sea Monkey" with a friend and they bought the map from a guy in town. You also see the dead body of Herman's companion on Monkey Island. Also, if you read the Captain's log you learn that it is written by Herman's companion and he is referring to his friend as "Toothrot", which means that Herman was already named at least Toothrot before he ended up on Monkey Island.

Finally, (and this is where it gets really complicated) according to MI3 Herman was pushed into a whirl pool and left for dead. MI4 explains that Herman washed up on Monkey Island, but that must mean that he has already been there because in MI3 LeChuck tells how Captain Marley (Herman Toothrot) and his crew sailed to Monkey Island and found Big Whoop, ripped the map into four pieces, and kept one each. After that Herman got involved in the whole whirl pool thing and ended up on Monkey Island. Never once in MI3 or MI4 is "The Sea Monkey", his friend, or his voyage to Monkey Island mentioned. Also, why would he want to go back to Monkey Island in MI1 when he has already been there and found Big Whoop? Then again, according to MI3 he never did and according to MI4 he washed up on the store and didn't travel by boat.

Are you still with me?

To summarize it all up: According to The Secret of Monkey Island Herman traveled to Monkey Island on the ship "The Sea Monkey" with a friend. They bought the map to Monkey Island from a guy in town. The Curse of Monkey Island  and Escape from Monkey Island states that he was pushed into a whirlpool during a boat race near Australia and then he washed up alone on Monkey Island. MI3 says LeChuck pushed him into the whirlpool while MI4 says it was Ozzie Mandrill.

The above explained by Matthew Kelly

LeChuck was lying about killing Elaine's father, as Ozzie will say in MI4. MI3 also never states that Elaine's grandfather is dead, just the LeChuck believes him to be dead. LeChuck wouldn't need to know Ozzie to tell the lie about killing HT. Anybody who'd read the Big Whoop book in MI2 would know that HT had mysteriously disappeared during the America's Cup race in a whirlpool.

Watch the cutscene again and pay attention. You will see that after the whirlpool incident, Herman does NOT wash ashore alone on Monkey Island. What happens is that he washes ashore on Melee Island with amnesia and so bedraggled that none recognizes them. He hears about the treasures of Monkey Island and he and his friend decide to sail off and find them.

Of course Toothrot was called Toothrot before he went to Monkey Island... he gave himself the name after washing up on Melee Island after the yachting accident, not when he arrived for the second time on Monkey Island.

Why did he return to find the secret of Monkey Island when he'd already found Big Whoop? Because he had forgotten he'd found it due to the amnesia.

In his flashback in MI4, Herman does arrive on Monkey Island by boat. It's Melee Island where he washes ashore, this doesn't contradict the Sea Monkey episode.

Webmaster's comment:

I watched the cutscene again and Herman doesn't say that he washed up on Monkey Island, but he also doesn't say that he washed up on Melee Island. Of course, it doesn't matter where he washed up as long as it wasn't on Monkey Island. He could always have traveled to Melee Island, bought The Sea Monkey from Stan, and traveled to Monkey Island with his friend.

Then there is his name. He says he took the name after the letters on the accordion. He has that in MI4, but he could of course have taken it with him when he traveled on the Sea Monkey from Melee Island to Monkey Island.

Matthew Kelly says that Herman arrives on Monkey Island by boat in the cutscene. He doesn't in the cutscene, but he says so in a conversation afterwards. His story ends after he says he washed ashore somewhere. The story indicates that he washed ashore on Monkey Island since he stops his story after saying that he washed ashore, but theoretically it could have happened as Matthew Kelly says.

The game should just have explained it better :)

Well Herman's story is half an error and not. The explanations make a lot of sense. If that's what they meant then it explains everything... But there was one mistake that can't be explained. It's probably due to lack of
communication during the making of the game... 
After Herman has been hit with the coconut and the milk bottle he'll say that last thing he can remember is
washing up on Monkey Island next to his accordion... So although the explanation by Matthew Kelly may be what they intended they still made THIS mistake.

If Herman's story happened as explained above, then Herman having a ship is also an error. When Herman gets more of his memory back he says he sunk his ship because he wanted to be a full-time hermit, and then when he remembers he's Horatio Marley he says: "I'd do anything to have my creaky old ship back."
He could be talking about the Sea Monkey, but Guybrush sank that.

The four "big whoop" pirates set sail with LeChuck to Dinky Island, then they discover the tunnel to Monkey Island. LeChuck enters Big Whoop and returns as a ghost...the rest of them run back through the tunnel to Dinky, get on their ship and sail off as fast as they can. They tear up the map and split up. LeChuck ends up with a ghost ship and crew, and makes Monkey Island his HQ. He then hunts down three of the four pirates and kills them, then he chases Marley all the way to Australia. He finds him in the middle of the race, and creates a mystical voodoo whirlpool nearby...

Ozzie Mandrill has no idea where the whirlpool came from, but he takes the opportunity and pushes Grandpa Marley down it. Marley is never seen again. LeChuck although not directly doing the deed, was the one who created the whirlpool with his voodoo powers.

Meanwhile, two friends, Herman Toothrot and his mate sail from Melee in the "Sea Monkey" to Monkey Island. Herman's mate gets hanged and Herman perishes in some other fashion, but they leave their Ship "The Sea Monkey" off shore.

Grandpa Marley meanwhile (having been teleported to Monkey through the mystical voodoo whirlpool) arrives on Monkey Island with his racing ship, and hides it somewhere. He gets hit on the head with an accordion marked "H.T." and loses his memory of who he really is and where he hid his ship. He soon discovers the Sea Monkey, and the captain's log, and other stuff, and he then takes the name Herman Toothrot on himself, believing that HE is Herman (even though the real Herman has died).

He sends back the Sea Monkey to Melee island with a crew of Monkeys to try and get help, they never return. Eventually he finds his original racing ship, but leaves it until the end of Monkey Island 1 when he takes Guybrush back in it to Melee. After this he sails back to Monkey, trashes his ship because of the whole "hermit" thing...but eventually loses more memory through various incidents until he is rediscovered by Guybrush in Monkey Island 4.

I think this theory is a good way of clearing up the mistakes. In other words, Herman Toothrot was a real man, but he was a completely different man to H.T. Marley. (Thus clearing up the whole Sea Monkey business and having two ships) It just so happens that Marley took on Toothrot's identity when he lost his own.
