#1 LeChuck punches Stan, who is clearly ejected to the East (at the right) of Melee Island, so why does he land in the harbor, which is South-West of the shipyard?
Added: Saturday, March 31, 2001

#2 If you look at Guybrush's shirt when you are playing MI1 you can see that there are blue threads in it. However, in the close-ups they are read and brown.
Added: Monday, June 18, 2001

#3 If you go to talk to the Sword Master without having talked to the Pirate Leaders and tell her you are selling Leather Jackets she will tell you that you are really there to prove your ability to the Pirate Leaders, and then Guybrush answers "Yes". That doesn't make sense, because Guybrush hasn't met them yet.
Added: Monday, January 7, 2002

#4 At the end of Part one on the pier, you can say to Carla 'How appropriate - you fight like a cow', and she says 'You never knew when to use that one', obviously referring to the Insult Swordfight with her. However, you can successfully use this insult on her in response to 'Let me Milk every drop off blood from your body!'
Added: Sunday, April 7, 2002

#5 When you have picked up the mugs and filled one with grog it starts to melt through the mug. When it has almost completely melted you must change mugs and the
used mug(s) is/are teleported back to the SCUMM BAR, which is a bit strange. And when you've freed Otis all
the mugs have gone. If you go back to the SCUMM BAR and pick up the mugs, they're also as good as new.
Added: Sunday, February 2, 2003

#6 How does Herman get to the cannibals' village if you have the boat, and there is clearly no way to the northern part of the island except by sea?
Added: Sunday, February 2, 2003

#7 When you travel around Melee Island, especially outside of Captain Smirk's house, you can hear an owl in the background. This owl is definitely the Barred Owl, as identified by its distinctive call. Barred Owls are present in parts of the United States and Canada, but it is not found in the Carribean.
Added: Saturday, May 1, 2004

#8 In the begining of part 1, if you do not go in to the Scumm Bar, but walk past until you get to the street with the prison and the shop, you will hear someone going pssssst and trying to get you to go to a alleyway. As you enter the alley Fester Shinetop (LeChuck) will sneak behind you and they will have a short conversation ending with Fester warning you not to do anything illeagle. Now, if you enter and exit the Scumm Bar there will be a short cutscene with LeChuck on his ship beneath Monkey Island saying he will take care of Guybrush. If Fester is really LeChuck how can he get from Melee Island to Monkey Island so fast?

Some might argue that he uses the underground tunnels that supposedly run under the islands, but that wasn't established until MI3 and the tunnels seen in MI2 connect Dinky, Booty, and Melee Island, not Monkey Island.
Added: Saturday, May 1, 2004

#9 If Guybrush looks at the chicken with a pulley in the middle *before* he uses it, he won't know what it's for. Even *after* he's used it twice he still doesn't know what it's for.
Added: Saturday, May 1, 2004

#10 If you ask the storekeep to go to Carla's, he'll leave, if you go out and wait for a while, go back in he'll be there again but you neither saw him enter his shop, nor come back.

Programming errors

#1 If you stand exactly here in the forest and the look at the map, Guybrush will magically transport to the other side of the canyon when you close the map.
Added: Friday, August 4, 2000Screenshots: 1 2

#2 You can give all your money to Otis and then you are unable to proceed in the game.
Added: Friday, August 4, 2000

#3 If you don't give the Idol of Many Hands to the Three-Important-Looking-Pirates it mysteriously disappears from your inventory when you get to Monkey Island.
Added: Friday, August 4, 2000

#4 This error only occur in the cd version:
In part II go down into the kitchen, pick up the pot, and open the cupboard with the cereal. If you then use the cereal with the pot a message will appear saying "No verb block in object 0" and the game will crash.
Added: Friday, September 1, 2000

#5 If you try to talk to Herman Toothrot after your conversation with him, Guybrush will say, "I can't reach it".
This makes no sense since all he has to do is walk over to Herman.
Added: Monday, September 11, 2000

#6 If you look at the skeleton statue holding a ball in the voodoo shop, Guybrush will just say "No thanks, I don't want to touch any of this creepy voodoo stuff". We want him to look at it, not to touch it.
In the demo, Guybrush says this is a presentation of Greek god Atlas.
Added: Monday, June 18, 2001

#7 If you select "Use" on the melting grog and then try to use it on something after it has completely disappeared, you get the error "object 365 not in room 30" because the object isn't there anymore.
Added: Monday, January 7, 2002

#8 When you start up the disk version of "The Secret of Monkey Island" you have to tell the game what soundcard you have. For instance if you have a SoundBlaster you start the game by typing "monkey s". If you instead type "monkey 1" you get a message saying "Debugging mode not active".

If you then try with the CD version and type "monkey1 1" to start up the game you will end up on a beach on Monkey Island with nothing in your inventory. If you type "monkey1 2" you will end up on the map of Monkey Island. You can type in different numbers and you will end up in different places of the game. Number 10 is especially funny :)
Added: Monday, January 7, 2002

#9 In LeChuck's cabin on his ship you obtain the ghost key from the wall using the magnetic compass. If you then stay in the cabin and use the key with the compass you get a replica key. This can be done as many times as you like.
Added: Monday, January 7, 2002

#10 When you go to Elaine's mansion for the first time and press Esc just at the exact moment in which Guybrush is about to enter the door next to the vase, Guybrush will then appear closing the door furthest to the right, as if he passed the cutscene. However, he doesn't say anything and his inventory doesn't have new items (such as the wax lips). Also, the painting of the man and the dog is still in the wall and you can enter the left door again and see the battle with Fester. This is hard to do, because it has to be in the very exact moment.
Added: Monday, January 7, 2002

#11 You can put all your money in the grog machine and then you are unable to proceed in the game.
Added: Sunday, April 7, 2002

#12 In Meathook's house, when you have to open the beast's door you can look at the map. After that you can see Guybrush without a head for a moment and then Guybrush magically walks without moving.
If you look at the map (right click on it) when the door is already open and you have to touch the beast, the game crashes.
Added: Sunday, April 7, 2002

#13 On Monkey Island at the river fork, if you look at spyglass you say "It doesn't seem to work." instead of reading that warning on it.
Added: Sunday, April 7, 2002

#14 This error can only occur in the CD version. If you use your box of cereal in the fire under the pot instead of using it for the recipe it will became a flaming mass and you wont be able to use it for the voodoo curse. Therefore, you can't proceed in the game.
Added: Sunday, February 2, 2003

Graphical errors

#1 In the 256 color versions there is an error at the end. When Guybrush falls down into the grog machine he is only displayed in 16 colors. See a picture here.
Added: Friday, August 4, 2000

#2 When you pick the yellow flower, it is a nice bright yellow, but when you go to Stan's Previously Owned Vessels, it turns a green-yellow color.
Added: Monday, September 11, 2000

#3 The moon can be seen in the sky above the village dock on Melee Island. However, in scenes where the dock is viewed from a fixed position, e.g. LeChuck's ship sailing into the distance, the moon has vanished.
Added: Monday, June 18, 2001

#4 In Part II Guybrush takes the Jolly Roger (the flag) and puts it in the pot. However, in the cutscene where Guybrush is fired from the cannon the ship still has the flag.
Added: Monday, January 7, 2002

#5 In the CD version, before picking up the rubber chicken and when you use it to get to Hook Isle, you see it is a white color, but in your inventory it is show in a brown color.
Added: Monday, January 7, 2002

#6 On the Sea Monkey you can unlock the captain's chamber with the prize without looking at it before. However in the CD version you can see that the key is still wrapped up in the inventory.
Added: Sunday, April 7, 2002

#7 Most Doors in the game are opening in different directions from both sides. For example the Scumm Bar door has its hinge left and is opened inwards, at least for the outdoors view. But if you are inside the Scumm Bar the hinge is left and the Door is opened outwards.
Added: Sunday, April 7, 2002

#8 In the CD version the root is coloured yellow in the inventory, but when giving it to the canibals it appears in a dark brown colour.
Added: Sunday, April 7, 2002

#9 Fester Shinetop doesn't wear his saber on the same side all the time. Sometimes it is plugged onto his left side and sometimes it is on his right side.
Added: Friday, August 9, 2002

#10 Like the yellow-flower petal error there's a similar error. When you got the ruberchicken and then go to Stan's ship emporium, the color isn't brown but some kind of yellow-green color. (Only occurs in the CD version.)
Added: Friday, August 9, 2002

#11 In the CD version, when you hit the bell in the shop, the shopkeeper comes in, goes to the desk, and then magically the door closes.
Added: Friday, August 9, 2002

#12 In close ups Smirks cigar suddenly has no smoke in the CD version.
Added: Friday, August 9, 2002

#13 The very important pirate's grog mugs are supposed to be on top of the table like you can see it in the CD version and in the Amiga version, but in the PC disk version they are missdrawn behind the table.
Added: Friday, August 9, 2002

#14 The hunk of meat you can see it in the kitchen hat a completely different shape when you give it to the piranha podles. This was fixed in the CD version in which the meat in the kitchen is redrawn.
Added: Friday, August 9, 2002

#15 In the PC disk version the key to the giant monkey head has no earwax on it after unlocking the head. You can clearly see earwax in the CD version and in the Amiga version.
Added: Friday, August 9, 2002

#16 On the disk version of Monkey Island, if you go into the SCUMM Bar and keep walking in and out of the kitchen, while the chef walks back and forth he says "Don't go into the kitchen" Keep going in and out. Sometimes, all of the graphic colours will invert and when you walk somewhere Guybrush's legs move rapidly, but he walks slowly.
Added: Sunday, February 2, 2003

#17 When playing the 256 color CD version and you are on the docks you can see places at the peaks in the roof where the old 16 colour version is visible and the shading suddenly stops.
Added: Sunday, February 2, 2003

#18 In the 16 color version the first time Guybrush enters the docks the sun is setting even though we've just seen Melee Island in total night during the opening sequence. This was fixed in the Amiga and 256 color PC versions.
Added: Sunday, February 2, 2003

#19 You can see that Elaine wears a purple shirt, brown vest and a red scarf, but in the close-ups, she wears a white blouse, a blue vest, and a purple scarf instead.
Added: Saturday, May 1, 2004

#20 When you go to the shopkeeper to ask for a credit note, skip all the dialogs with "Esc" (or ".") until he asks you what your occupation is (that way you won't see the safe combination, though). After you answered him, don't skip the following scene: The shopkeeper will "walk" up to the safe, on invisible stairs, through the banisters, without being scaled down. After he put the credit note back, he'll come back the same way, on invisible stairs.
I discovered this in the enhanced CD version using ScummVM. But it only worked when I skipped all the dialogs before telling the shopkeeper of my occupation, and it only seemed to work when I said "I clean ships at Stan's used ship yard" or "To be honest, sir, I'm between jobs".

Incorrectly regarded as errors

#1 On the Sea Monkey you can put all flammable items into the cooking pot except for the map. However you can decide not to buy the map on Melee Island. You don't need it since you can dig up the treasure after you followed the shop keeper into the forest. This way you are unable to get the flaming mass, which is required to firing the cannon.
You can use the diary found in the captains room on the ship with the fire to get a flaming mass.
Added: Sunday, April 7, 2002

#2 The root used to make the kill-ghost potion is very rare because there is only one in existence.
We never see or hear that Elaine has met the Cannibals so how could she have the potion?
Normal root beer works just as well. Guybrush kills LeChuck with a normal root beer so that's probably what Elaine had too.
Added: Friday, August 9, 2002

#3 The grog is green-colored, but the pirate leaders say it contains red dye number 2, so it should be red.
Even though something contains a certain color dye doesn't necessarily mean that the product will be that color.
Added: Friday, August 9, 2002

#4 On the back of the box there is a sample of the memoirs of Guybrush Threepwood. It is written that LeChuck is "so jealous and so stupid that he doesn't even know that he is dead for a long time".
However, when you play the game, we see LeChuck saying that there are some days that make him glad to be dead !
LeChuck says that line in a cutscene when Guybrush isn't around
.
Added: Friday, August 9, 2002

#5 When the Citizen of Melee asks you if you want to buy a Melee Island treasure map, he gets out a map, unrolls it and we can see on it a normal map, with a cross and a line. But when Guybrush buys it and reads it, the paper shows a text talking about a dance.
The Citizen of Melee simply used the real map to trick people and then gave them dance instructions when they were fooled into buying the map.
Added: Friday, August 9, 2002

#6 If Guybrush is invisible to the ghosts, then why can the ghost rat see him?
The rat doesn't see him. It hears or smells him.
